This superbly bred colt is by Lord Leatherdale out of my Ferro daughter, Valkyrie. The cross of Lord Leatherdale on Ferro (and his sons Negro, Metall, Kennedy, etc.) is now known as a magical "nick" that has produced KWPN champion stallions such as Chippendale, Everdale, Fairytale, and Glamourdale, and Don Diego.
Lord Leatherdale is an outstanding stallion representing the very best of Westphalian, Rhinelander, and now KWPN bloodlines. He was bought by the well-known Dutch stud farm, Van Olst Horses (home of Negro and Valegro), to be an outcross stallion for their fantastic program (and for KWPN horses). And what a fantastic cross it has been! Lord Leatherdale has contributed very valuable genetic material to KWPN bloodlines by adding a longer leg, free shoulder movement, and a very modern, refined look. It is no wonder he has added so much to KWPN breeding.
Van Olst Horses is the owner of the great Ferro son, Negro (sire of the incomparable Valegro)! Lord Leatherdale on Ferro and his sons (Negro, Rhodium, Metall, Kennedy, etc.) mares has quickly become known as a magical nick resulting in great offspring such Chippendale, Everdale, Dilona, Dundee, Fairytale, Glamourdale, Hortensia, River Rise Escala, Graaf Leatherdale, and others. Lord Leatherdale’s modern look, long legs, and free shoulders, combined with Ferro’s power, hind engine, and ability to sit has been incredibly successful.
Lord Leatherdale is a son of Lord Loxley, Reserve Champion at the 2004 FEI World Championships for Young Horses and winner of the German Bundeschampionat as a 5-year old with a score of 9.4 points. Lord Loxley descends from Lord Sinclair who commandingly won his Stallion Performance Test and twice captured the Federal Championships. Lord Sinclair has already sired over 20 approved sons including Sir Sinclair and Lord of Dancing. Lord Loxley’s dam brings in the valuable Hanoverian blood of Weltmeyer ~ one of the most influential dressage sires in the past 20 years.
At his Stallion Performance Test Lord Leatherdale was Reserve Champion. He continues to be developed in sport and is showing incredible talent for the FEI work, starting his grand prix career in 2016. In addition, Lord Leatherdale has been a very popular breeding stallion in Holland and his offspring are already bringing him notice. In the fall of 2007, Lord Leatherdale’s first offspring were evaluated by the KWPN officials with very positive feedback. The foals as a whole showed a very uniform type with a good rectangular model. They moved well using their whole body and offered a naturally uphill trot.
Knightengale’s dam, Valkyrie, is by the immortal stallion, Ferro. Olympic Ferro first achieved fame when he competed in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia and assisted his team in a team silver medal. He was lovingly known as the “Black Pearl”. Although Ferro tragically passed away from colic at a relatively young age in 2005, ten years later in 2015 he is still number 8 on the WBFSH Dressage Sire ranking list!
Ferro is not only one of the great dressage horses himself, he is a sire of great dressage horses and has become one of the great KWPN legacy sires. His most successful direct offspring include Glock’s Undercover NOP, a top horse for Edward Gal, as well as Mythilus, who carried Courtney King Dye to many wins. Both competed at the Olympic level.
Ferro is a sire of sires. He has 8 approved KWPN sons such as Negro, Metall, Rousseau, Kennedy, Pyriet, Paddox, Osmium, Rhodium. He has over 20 grandsons approved as stallions such as Ampere, Special D, Painted Black, Olympic gold medalist Uthopia, Wamberto, and Zack. Wamberto, Zack, and Ampere were consecutively champions of the KWPN stallions licensing. His great grandsons include champions such as Chippendale, Everdale, Fairytale, Franklin, Glamourdale, Sezuan, and Handsome O. In fact, it’s hard to find a KWPN stallion without Ferro blood.
Ferro’s most well-known grand-offspring is the record-setting horse Valegro (by Negro) who has broken his own records over and over again, winning Olympic Gold, WEG Gold, and World Cup Gold medals. Valegro is shown by Charlotte DuJardin and is currently the number one dressage horse in the world. Valegro shows the influence of his grand-sire Ferro.
And it doesn’t end there. Valkyrie’s dam-sire is Olympic Idocus. Idocus competed in the Olympics, multiple World Cups, and was a mainstay in International Dressage for many years. He also sired Olivier who was internationally successful.
I am thrilled with the quality of this colt! This handsome colt has inherited the gorgeous canter and free shoulder of his sire, Lord Leatherdale. Combined with the powerful engine of Ferro, this colt has what it takes to follow in the footsteps of his champion brothers Chippendale, Everdale, Fairytale, and Glamourdale.
This colt is a true stallion prospect. He is well mannered, leads, picks up his feet, etc.
