A seasoned Adult Amateur, serious JR/ YR or Young Professional will have a blast spending time in the barn with Portofino and his engaging personality! When you are grooming him he tells you where he likes to be scratched; as you are tacking him up he watches everything you are doing and helps you put his bridle on; and in his stall and turn out he loves socializing with his neighbors.

Portofino started his dressage career showing in the FEI 5-year-old classes in Wellington, FL. He was purchased by his Adult Amateur owner who had no goals for showing him and wanted to enjoy riding a quality horse. USDF Gold medalist Lauren Smith is Portofino’s trainer and agent. She met Portofino while giving clinics in South Dakota. The owner enjoyed Lauren's positive teaching and training style and decided to send Portofino to Lauren last year to teach him Third and Fourth Level movements. He can occasionally have a little scoot if something startles him, which is why he is not for a beginner rider- and a rider who knows this is part of his engaging personality will see that he gets right back to work. With his super work ethic, he learned so quickly, Lauren decided to let her 15-year-old daughter enjoy putting him back in the show ring. He qualified for Rocky Mountain Dressage Society’s Third Level Championships for Juniors in two shows, and finished up 2015 in third place out of five competitors. Best of all, he took in all the show activity like he had continued showing his whole life.

His excellent breeding shows through in his three solid gaits, great personality and is striking looks! He has supple and flexible half passes, forward-thinking and easy–to-sit extensions and a nice uphill feel to his canter. Portofino has shivers, a condition many larger horses are born with; however it’s not noticeable if Lauren had not mentioned it. He stands for the farrier, loads and trailers easily, and it hasn’t affected his training or showing.
