Purebred Irish Draught mare-green & started under saddle

6 year old purebred Irish Draught mare, Wind Frost (Baltydaniel Breeze x Glitter of Diamonds) is now available. Frosty is an adult amateur’s dream horse. At 15.3 ½ hh, she is perfectly sized and takes up a lot of leg thanks to well sprung ribs.

An experienced broodmare and devoted mama, she foaled a very handsome colt by Silver Granite in 2022. Registered with the IDHSNA, she has not yet attended a breed inspection but is eligible for approval. She was started under saddle in April 2023 as a 5 year old and was ridden consistently by me through this past June, when she was sidelined by a sore muscle and bruised sole. She’s since fully recovered, is totally sound and ready for new riding adventures. Complete vet records, including x-rays are available.

Frosty is a dream horse for an adult amateur. Many people say that, but Frosty REALLY is that. She’d be safe to put a younger rider on, but she is green so take that for what it is worth. True to her name, she is one of the sweetest horses I’ve ever met. She doesn't want to be in your pocket, she would prefer to sit on your lap and be fed sugar cubes. 🙂
She is the first Irish Draught that we bought and is the reason why we have all of the others. She’s simply the best breed ambassador around.

She’s kind, careful, quiet, respectful and cautious. Literally, anyone can handle or ride her. She does all the expected things- loads, stands for the farrier, tolerates baths (which is fortunate since she prefers to be filthy-no joke), and usually naps while in the cross ties. She has not needed shoes and has fabulous, hard feet. She rides out alone or in a group. She can trail ride alone. She is everyone’s best friend and is the type of horse you can pasture with any other as she makes sure she gets along with everyone. While she is happy to boss around young horses, she is also content to be at the bottom of the pecking order or anywhere in between, especially if she convinces the other horse to share pellets with her. 🙂

She learns fast and does her best to please. She internalizes stress and is generally outwardly calm in the face of uncertainty. She has a beautiful floaty trot and a rhythmic canter to die for. Riding her reminds me of riding in a luxury car.

She has done some barn shows, local jump shows, derbies and horse trials. She has schooled cross country and has competed at both grasshopper (logs on the ground) and starter levels. Her dressage scores show promise, too. She actively tries to learn dressage tests and jump courses. She is a very low key mare. She goes into what I call “energy conservation mode” which typically involves her napping in the cross ties or while waiting for her class. She can jump and does jump. She has a nice, long stride. The most we’ve done together is starter level. I’m NOT convinced jumping is her favorite thing, but she is also green. She does appear to enjoy being out on cross country. That said, she is also cautious and careful. It seems to take her three times around a XC course before she has it all together and is comfortable. Now, I am also green. Two greenies together aren’t always a great combination, which is why I bought an experienced eventer. I would not have considered replacing her with any horse but the one I ended up buying.

I have owned her since she was two and was terrified of the hose. She learns and gets over things. I am a more "seasoned" rider starting in a new sport. She and I could have continued to train together but the practical part of me realizes I need a more experienced horse. And we've decided to not breed anymore, with the exception of a horse for our daughter.

She has a lot to offer the North American Irish Draught herd as a riding and as a breeding mare. She is one of only two purebred mares in the US by her sire. I think, but certainly don’t know, that she may be happier as a dressage horse or as someone’s best friend or trusty trail rider. Her sire, Baltydaniel Breeze, show jumped and competed in dressage. She seems to me to be more comfortable in an arena, fwiw.

From a breeding point of view, she carries Skippy and O’Leary’s Irish Diamond genes, in addition to her own performance sire. She took on first insemination with old frozen semen from Silver Granite. She foaled on day 320, consistent with being foaled early herself. Her pregnancy was boring and uneventful, which makes it perfect. Her dam has proven to be very fertile and easy to breed. I would reasonably expect Frosty to continue to prove to be the same. I have actually purchased semen from her sire, which shows how fabulous I think she is. As a first time mama, she initially was fiercely protective of her colt, but relaxed with time. She was a very good mama to him and to the other babies, all of whom were weaned before her colt. She was frequently seen with one of the other weanlings by her side, in addition to her own colt. She maintains nursing condition very well. I am firmly convinced Frosty actually GAINED weight while nursing her big, fat colt. Breeding records are available, upon request.
